LGBT Health Disparities
May 3, 2007
Health disparities result from complex interactions among factors such as income, education, race and ethnicity, cultural influences, environment, and access to quality health services. LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) populations are among the most vulnerable and under served populations experiencing health disparities.
Please join the Cream City Foundation and the Donors Forum for a roundtable discussion on this issue. This session will focus on recent research related to health disparities among LGBT populations corresponding to stated health priorities in Healthiest Wisconsin 2010. It will also cover findings from the 2005 Diverse and Resilient statewide needs assessment of health disparities among LGBT populations in Wisconsin; including programmatic recommendations to reduce disparities and their related human and public costs.
This discussion aims to help participants better understand health disparities among LGBT populations, their underlying causes, and efficacious strategies to reduce disparities. What systemic policy changes are needed to reduce identified disparities and their causes? What changes should be made to increase access to health care prevention and treatment services by members of LGBT populations? And how can LGBT individuals become more assertive advocates for themselves in public health and in health care environments?
This discussion will be facilitated by Gary Hollander, President and Executive Director of Diverse and Resilient, Inc. Gary is also past president and current board member of the Wisconsin AIDS Fund, a fund within the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.
